D.F. Plett Graduate Fellowship
The D.F. Plett Historical Research Foundation provides graduate fellowships for students in the Masters and PhD programs at the University of Winnipeg/Manitoba, and in the Masters program at Canadian Mennonite University. The D.F. Plett Graduate Fellowships were created to commemorate the contribution of Delbert F. Plett, Q.C. to the story of the Low German Mennonites in Canada and the Americas. These fellowships is intended to encourage graduate students who are pursuing studies and research in the history of the forerunners and descendants of the 1870s Mennonite migrants to Manitoba.

Value of the Award
At the University of Winnipeg, a maximum of two fellowships are held at any given time. PhD. Fellowships are $15,000 while Masters Fellowships are $10,000. PhD. Fellowships may be renewed once subject to the availability of funds and a satisfactory progress report. This results in a maximum award for a PhD. Fellowship of $30,000 and $10,000 for a Masters Fellowship candidate.
At the Canadian Mennonite University, one Masters Fellowship is available for $7500.
Eligibility
At the University of Winnipeg, eligible candidates must have been admitted or are applying to complete a Master of Arts degree in history in the Joint Masters Program of the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, or a Ph.D. in history at the University of Manitoba.
At the Canadian Mennonite University, eligible candidates must have been admitted to complete a Master of Arts degree in Theological Studies and have completed the 36 hours of course work in the program.
Conditions of the Award
The award will be held in the year for which it was granted. The thesis or dissertation must be supervised by the Chair in Mennonite Studies at the University of Winnipeg or by a faculty member in the Biblical and Theological Studies Department at Canadian Mennonite University and must be based on primary source research.
Application Procedures
Please submit the completed application form with the following documentation:
- a photocopy of official transcripts
- a summary of not more than 250 words of the proposed research
- sealed letters from two referees–Professors who are who are familiar with the applicant’s previous academic work
For applications to study at the University of Winnipeg, the deadline is January 1st if studies are to commence in the fall of that year.
For applications to study at Canadian Mennonite University, the deadlines are March 1st if studies are to commence in the fall of that year, and July 1st if studies are to commence in January.
