General Samuel McRoberts Photo Collection

June 16, 2015

In 2014, the Mennonite Heritage Centre received six photograph albums of 231 photos from the family of former New York banker, General Samuel McRoberts (1868-1947). These photos provide some of the earliest images of the settling of the Paraguayan Chaco in the 1920s by Mennonites from Saskatchewan and Manitoba. McRoberts proved to be an important player and ally, without whom it would be hard to imagine the migration to Paraguay happening. The photos had suffered considerable deterioration, however this photo of the J .U. Kehler family in front of their home in Halbstadt illustrates the challenges of settling in an unfamiliar landscape. Image courtesy of Mennonite Heritage Centre Archives.
